Community Involvement - 9/2006

Guest Appearance at the Ohio Jr. Bass Federation Championship in Delaware, Ohio

Joe Thomas and Jim Doss

I was invited to appear at the Ohio Jr. Bass Federation Championship which was held on Delaware Lake, OH.

I met some of the most ambitious, intelligent and confident young anglers at this event. And YES, even the "female" population was represented :-)

Doug Clifford (Youth Director of Ohio Youth Bass Federation) and Bill Greene (Director's Assistant) are the driving force behind Ohio's GREAT Youth Bass Federation.

1st Place

After spending the day out on the camera boat, and watching these kids in action, it would not surprise me if Ohio became the birthplace of many future Bass Fishing Pro's.  I was SO impressed by the precision of their casts! And to listen to them explain to me their "tournament tactics", well it was like having a conversation with any of the other Bass Pro's that I know.  These kids know their stuff!!!

The winners of this State Championship will be fishing in the Nationals in Missouri. The lake has not yet been announced.

Congratulations to all of kids who made it to the Championship!!! I feel so proud of each and every one of you  :-)

Quoted from article:

"Perhaps the highlight of the tournament was having Marcia Rubin of the Women's Bassmaster Tour as one of the boat captains for the shootout. "

"I wish we could have had a hundred kids here to meet such a great ambassador for bass fishing"

"Marcia found time to talk with every young angler in this event and encouraged them to pursue their dreams wherever they lead. "

New Sponsor Announcement! 6/2006

Announcing HOOAH!....my latest (and tastiest) sponsor!!!

Anyone who has ever been out on the boat with me knows that I keep a nice healthy supply of HOOAH! Energy Bars and Drinks on board with me. Actually, I keep them in my car, my truck, my boat, my purse, my desk, etc... :-)

I have low blood sugar, and would often find myself in situations where I needed something to eat...and I needed it quick before I passed out! HOOAH! is the perfect solution for me. Not only does it help me with my low blood sugar, it also supplies me with the necessary protein that I wasn't getting through my diet.

HOOAH! Energy Bars make it possible to always have something to eat, that is not only nutritious, but will also boost my physical and mental performance, wherever or whenever I need it.

The best part about HOOAH! is that I can leave them in my boat and not worry that they will spoil from the heat. HOOAH! Bars were formulated to withstand all sorts of adverse conditions, without it having a negative effect on the product. This is what our Soldiers are eating and drinking!!!

HOOAH! supplies your body with a blend of essential nutrients to provide steady energy WITHOUT the CRASH that you may experience with other Energy Bars or drinks that depend on caffeine for increased energy.

HOOAH! supports our troops too!

D'Andrea Brothers, LLC, the distributor of the HOOAH! bar and energy drink, sends a portion of the proceeds from each bar and can sold to help fund government research into Soldier safety, diet, and quality of life.

A LOVE FOR THE OUTDOORS
Women’s Bassmaster Tour is Perfect Outlet for Passionate Ohio Angler Marcia Rubin

CELEBRATION, Fla. – Marcia Rubin, a self-described tomboy, has always loved the outdoors. Now, she’s found a women-only outlet with which to take advantage of that passion.

Rubin, of Chagrin Falls, Ohio, is one of the more than 200 women fishing the Mercury Marine Women’s Bassmaster Tour presented by Triton Boats. Already, she’s finished 83rd in the first event and 29th in the second. She’s preparing now for the third event on Lake Norman, July 27-29, in North Carolina.

“Fishing is a challenge and it’s a new game every time you go out on the water,” said Rubin. “That is why I love it so much.”

Rubin, 41, has had several careers, but none of them are as important as fishing. She has been a part-time model since high school and was a cosmetologist after she graduated. She became a dental assistant and took advanced training in cosmetic dentistry and tooth restoration. She now co-owns a wood-working machinery maintenance company and operates a Web site, http://www.reelady.com, that chronicles the women’s’ tour and Rubin’s performance.

But growing up in suburbia, Rubin always felt a little out of place. She would spend her afternoons sitting in an undeveloped lot daydreaming and as she got older, she biked to a creek about five miles away to feel closer to nature.

When Rubin married her first husband, an avid fisherman, she began to harness her passion for the outdoors and fishing. “He took me to a golf course pond and I caught a 3-pound bass. From then on, our lives revolved around fishing… all of it from the bank,” said Rubin.

Rubin said she found solace and peace in the pastime, as it helped her overcome the untimely death of her husband – who she lost in a car accident - as well as her mother and step-father to two unrelated illnesses. By the time Rubin was 23, she was a widow with a newborn.

But she continued to fish, introducing her first child - as well as her daughter she had with a second husband - to fishing. About two years ago, Rubin finally bought a small boat and then – enjoying it so much - upgraded to a larger boat within eight months. She then attended the 2005 CITGO Bassmaster Classic in Pittsburgh and heard BASS announce the new women’s tour. “It was a no brainer that I had to get involved in the WBT,” she said. “It was a dream come true.”

Rubin divorced her second husband in 2001 and is now engaged. Between her and her fiancée, they have five children, three of which will be in college in September. But even with those financial responsibilities – as well as her varied careers – Rubin considers the WBT a top priority. Helping her along the way are sponsors Gamma Performance Line, Shimano, Minn Kota, Humminbird, Hamby’s Protector, Loc-R-Bar, Cooks “Go To” Tackle System, Fantasy Sound and Lighting, OhioGameFishing.com and Dagger Photography.

“I truly believe I can make a difference on this tour,” Rubin said. “All of the women can. This is the most unique group of women I’ve ever known. They impress me and inspire me.”

Sponsors of the Women’s Bassmaster Tour include Mercury Marine, Triton Boats, Lowrance Electronics, Motor Guide, Advance Auto Parts and Plano.

BASS is the worldwide authority on bass fishing, sanctioning more than 20,000 events through the BASS Federation Nation annually. Guided by its mission to serve all fishing fans, BASS sets the standard for credibility, professionalism, sportsmanship and conservation, as it has for nearly 40 years.

On the Radio - Marcia live on H2o Radio from Neely Henry Lake
While prefishing for my Neely Henry WBT tournament, I receive a phone call from the guys at H2o Radio (http://www.h2oradio.com)  wanting to do a "Live" radio interview :-) They stumbled across my website while looking up information on the (almost) world record bass that was caught in California. They were totally intrigued by me and my pursuit of a professional bass fishing career. I spoke with John Bloomfield and Collins Doughtie for quite a while, and will admit, I had a lot of fun with them! It felt like I was just sitting around talking with a bunch of old friends. These guys are serious fishermen, and know their stuff! But what they also know is how to have a great time, which certainly comes through in their senses of humor on this international radio show. You can listen to the interview with me by clicking this link. (My interview is about halfway through the show). Episode 86 - Air Date: April 22, 2006
H2O Radio Show: Ep86 (may take a while to download...be patient :-)  )

Kudos - to Buck's Island Marina (Alabama)

Wow, talk about coming through at a time of serious need...The staff at Buck's Island Marina went above and beyond what anyone would expect. Here I was, a complete stranger to them, and they took care of me like I was part of their family. You see, toward the end of my last day of prefishing, my motor developed an issue, which basically left me "floating powerless"  in the middle of  Neely Henry. I called the nearest Marina, which happened to be Buck's, and my phone call to them is pretty much the equivalent of a frantic 911 call. Mary answered the phone, and handled my "Panic mode" with "Kid Gloves".  She reassured me that they will take care of me, and that everything will be "okay". Trust me, at that moment, I wasn't exactly sure how things would be okay, because I was on the verge of being late for registration, and had a boat that was dead on the water the night before the 1st day of the tournament. But, just hearing those reassuring words from her, in that sweet Southern accent really had a way of calming me down. She made arrangements for one of her staff to go to the launch ramp to get my trailer hooked up to their truck, and proceeded to meet me at a nearer ramp. They were there at the ramp about 45 minutes after receiving my phone call. Meanwhile, a very very kind local gentleman saw that I was in trouble, and so kindly offered to tow me to wherever it was that I needed to go. I spent the next 2 hours being towed up Neely Henry, and my brain was overwhelmed with all of the possible outcomes. None of which looked good...I finally made my way to the nearest ramp, and Buck's was there waiting for me. Meanwhile, it's after hours...They took my boat to the shop, and within 15 minutes had my problem figured out. Unfortunately, because my motor is a "Saltwater" motor, and not a typical tournament motor, they did not have the necessary parts to get me up and running by the next morning. They ended up driving almost 8 hours there and back to pick up the part that I needed the next day! Now I know first hand what they mean by good old "Southern Hospitality"! The entire staff at Buck's Island Marina were absolutely wonderful, and for that I Thank them so much!!! I stopped by on Sunday to meet all of my "behind the scene" heroes to personally thank them for coming through for me. While I was there, I ended up test driving a used Skeeter too! By the way, Buck's is a HUGE boat dealer that sells just about every brand of boat under the sun, both new and used. I KNOW that you can save a LOT of money by purchasing boat from them, not only because of the volume of boats that they sell, but because they could afford to sell for less because they sell boats 12 months a year. Do yourself a favor, and if you are in the market for a new or used boat, give Melissa a call (tell her that Marcia/Reelady sent you), and price a boat. I think that a 5 or 6 thousand dollar savings is well worth an 11 hour trip. Buck's Island Marina - 1-800-Im-Ready (1-256-442-2588) www.bucksisland.com

Promotional - Minnesota's Outdoor Expo

Just returned from a 5 day trip from Minnesota. I worked at the GAMMA booth, and once again...had a simply amazing show.  Mark my words, you have only seen the beginning of this line, and I am convinced will be the top selling line, it's just a matter of time :-) Of the 5 dealers that were there carrying the line, 2 of them were practically sold out! You see, we are not there selling the line, we are there "demonstrating" the line. As an educated consumer, it's nice to see how your favorite (or not so favorite) line compares side by side with the new GAMMA performance fishing line. Trust me, the results are shocking, as anyone who has witnessed these side by side comparisons would vouch. I've convinced many a fishermen who have been fishing with the same line for many many years. And trust me, if I can get through to them, then that speaks volumes!!! The latest rage is the Charter Captains...they are buying this line up like it's going out of style...why? Because it lasts! So yes...it's not just me that's crazy about this line...the word is spreading...and quick!

Promotional - Cleveland's IX Center - Sportsmen's Show
March 18-19, 2006 - Spent the weekend with Dan from Ohio Outdoor News at the Sportsmen's Show in my hometown! :-) I saw many familiar faces, and got to meet quite a few of you that I know from the internet. Thanks to all that took the time to visit our booth to say "Hi".  I was so impressed with how many people came up to us (Dan) and told him what a "wonderful publication" this was. While many others would stroll by giving the thumbs up gesture and say "It's the BEST!!" If you've never had a chance to read it, you should! This newspaper has been in publication here in Ohio since January 2006 and already has 21,000 subscribers! That's impressive! 1 year subscription is only 18.00 (2 year 32.00) They will also send you an awesome hat as a sign of their appreciation!

Promotional - Bass Pro Shops "Spring Classic" in Detroit

March 11-12, 2006 - I spent the weekend at the Detroit Bass Pro Shops (Basspro.com)  "Spring Fishing Classic" promoting GAMMA Performance Line and Shimano. I met so many wonderful people, and a few of them are now members of my forum! The fact that there were only 5 boxes of 6lb test line left in that entire store goes to show you how amazing this line is.  I'm hoping now that BPS has seen the demand for this "one of a kind" line, that they will always keep a nice healthy stock of GAMMA  for all you clear water fisherman :-)

Community - visit to the Alliance Boys Group home

March 8, 2006 - I visited the Alliance Boys Group Home last night with a few other members from Ohio Game Fishing. We are setting up an event to take 135 teens fishing out on Lake Erie. (Tentative date June 15, 2006). Other than that event, their will be many other opportunities to take these kids fishing in smaller groups.

I just want to tell everyone how lucky I feel to have gotten involved with such a great group of guys (and soon girls )
I love the energy that these kids have, and cant wait to put it to good use out on the water
A message to anyone that is looking to donate cash and or tackle supplies of any kind, (including hats, rainwear, tackle boxes, needle nose pliers, hooks, lures, line, spinning reels/rods, back or fanny packs, etc.) it would be totally worth your while to look into donating it to the Alliance Boys Group Home. They are already doing our community such an incredible service by opening their hearts to these teens who have been victimized in one way or another. Lets show these kids that we care!
These children would be so appreciative of anything that they would receive, and better yet...it would be something they could claim as "THEIR VERY OWN" that they will have and cherish for very long time. These kids are worth it! Please send me an email if you are interested, and I will provide you with the contact information. Click here to send E-mail

New Sponsor Announcement - 2/25/06

Mustang Survival - Honestly, you have to try their PFD  & Survival Suit on for yourself to understand what I am saying.  The only way I can describe the feeling while wearing these items is "It's just like being "cradled" in comfort". The material around the neck, wrists, and ankles is so soft and comfortable, that it is easy to see how you could forget that you even have it on! Hard to believe, I know! Ask any tournament angler, and they will tell you, how they hate wearing their PFD's because they are constricting, and HOT!  And up here in Ohio, there is a lot of ice fishing going on. This is something that I have resisted participating in, simply because, well, I admit...I am afraid to be out on the ice! I think next year will be my debut ice fishing year, because now I have the confidence that I can be safe & warm. Trust me, Mustang Survival products are in a class all by themselves when it comes to "Safety" and "Comfort". Do yourself and your family a favor and visit: www.mustangsurvival.com

New Sponsor Announcement! - 2/14/06

While I was at the Columbus boat show this weekend, I was incredibly fortunate when I came across the Fantasy Sound and Lighting exhibit. They have such a unique yet practical product, and that product is L.E.D. lighting for you boat. Think of all of the possibilities! Light your livewell, storage compartments, rod lockers, decks, steps, control panel, trailer, etc...These L.E.D. lights are totally waterproof, and run off of a 12v battery. I've been eyeing these L.E.D. lights for some time now, and finally my fantasy of having a well lit boat is coming true! Not only is this incredibly practical, but it will look awesome too! Community - January 2006 - Career Day at Kenston High School

I had such a great experience last week, that I'm feeling compelled to share it with all of the other women who have committed to fish the Women's Bassmaster Tour.

I was invited to speak at a local High School (in Ohio) for their "Career Day" regarding "Professional Bass Fishing" as a career. Fishing "Pro"...? Huh? Me??? Fishing pro??? Hmm...I'm just a woman who would fish 24 hours a day if time allowed! Obsessed with it? Yeah, maybe! Well, okay, yes... Consumed with it? Yup, pretty much!.....well, okay make that a "yes" too!!....But a "Pro?" This is still a title that has not quite sunk in yet I suppose...I mean, yes, I do own a boat and I tow it all over the country to fish in the Women's Bassmaster Tour. And yes, my entry fees are a bit higher than the non-boaters, but does that make me a "Pro???” My personal opinion is that all of the women who have made the commitment to fish the WBT are ALL "Pro's"..."PRO-foundly obsessed with fishing!"
